Paying it Forward - Dr. Robert Sheffield and Smiles for a Lifetime
By Bob Kouba, Vice-President / Relationship Banker - Scott Valley Bank, Walnut Creek office
At Scott Valley Bank, we embrace the philosophy of ‘paying it forward’. We believe in making a difference in our communities, even when that means making things happen in quiet ways.
We are proud to feature a story about a client, Brentwood and Antioch orthodontist, Robert Sheffield, DDS, who also embraces the spirit of giving in a quiet, but significant, way. Dr. Sheffield participates in Smiles for a Lifetime, a national, charitable non-profit organization whose mission is to provide orthodontic care for individuals who may not otherwise have the financial resources, or who may have other special circumstances that obstruct their ability to obtain the service for themselves.
The Smiles for a Lifetime Orthodontic Foundation states it is their mission “to create self-confidence, inspire hope, and change the lives of children in our communities in a dramatic way. The gift of a smile can do all this for a deserving, underserved individual who, in turn, can use this gift to better themselves and their community.”
Orthodontists throughout the U.S. participate. A Board of Directors for each region selects recipients of the orthodontic scholarships. Information and program applications are available at Dr. Sheffield’s website.
Dr. Sheffield began his participation in “Smiles for a Lifetime” in mid 2011. His first group of orthodontic scholarships was awarded to six children in September. Dr. Sheffield has recently awarded six more scholarships (March 2012) and it is his plan to provide 12 orthodontic scholarships each year. Sheffield’s “Smiles for a Lifetime” program has nine directors, of which I am one, who review all the applications and determine which children will be awarded scholarships. The determination is based on need (both dental and financial) but also on the applicant’s community involvement and academic performance. Dr. Sheffield’s staff is also active promoting the program in the local schools (middle school primarily), churches, youth groups such as Boys and Girls Club plus referrals from local dentists.
Dr. Robert Sheffield’s generosity provides smiles, self-esteem, inspiration, and is an elegant example of ‘paying it forward.’ Sure makes us smile!
