Q: Planning to travel outside of the US? Read our tips to help you be money safe while on your trip.

A:

Carry and use your major credit card:

Travel with your individual credit cards. That way, if a traveling partner experiences a loss or theft, you will have your own card to rely on.

Your credit card offers extra protection from fraud with your signature. Ensure you have that extra protection by signing rather that using a PIN when using your credit or your debit card.

Let your bank and credit card company know of your travel plans:

Why is this important?  Most banks and credit card companies have implemented technology to assist them in protecting you from fraudulent use of your credit and debit cards. The technology has the power to disallow your transaction should it fall outside your normal spending pattern. This is why it is important to call your credit card issuers and your bank to let them know that you'll be traveling internationally. If you don't alert your creditors, they may lock your accounts at the first sign of a suspicious charge from a foreign country.

The following is information regarding measures Scott Valley Bank takes, and your role, to help protect against victimization by possible fraudulent use of your Scott Valley Bank ATM/Check (Debit) Card information:

To protect your account, we routinely monitor Scott Valley Bank ATM/Check (Debit) Card transactions for potentially fraudulent activity.

Types of activities that trigger our attention include:

• sudden change in locale (such as when a U.S.- issued card is unexpectedly used overseas)
• a sudden string of costly purchases made anywhere
• or any pattern similar to emerging or existing fraud trends around the world

If we suspect fraudulent ATM/Check Card use, we may call you to validate the legitimacy of your transactions. Your participation in responding to our call is critical to prevent potential risk and avoid inconvenience to you with restrictions we may otherwise place on the use of your card. Your pre-notification to us of your travel plans will allow us to ensure that your card works as you expect along your itinerary. At any time, should we detect suspicious activities, you can typically expect an automated call that will state, "This is the Fraud Detection Center calling to verify recent activity on your Scott Valley Bank ATM/Debit (Check) Card."

You’ll be asked to:

• enter the zip code of your primary account mailing address
• verify recent transaction activity on your card
• respond via your touchtone keypad
• call should you have additional questions (a number will be provided during the call)

You should contact us:

• if you suspect or identify fraudulent transactions, or with any questions you may have
• whenever your phone number or address changes so we can easily contact you if need be
• when you plan to use your ATM/Check (Debit)Card out of the country (we will then set the necessary parameters to allow your transactions to process as usual.)  It is important that you bear in mind that once we reset the tolerances for your card to allow activity in a foreign country, transactions originating from that country will be treated the same as your routine local transactions.  This means that if you wish to use your ATM/Check (Debit) card in a foreign country, your request to do so causes the protective screening normally in place to be inactivated for that country until you notify us of your return.  That is why we recommend the use of any major credit card when you travel abroad.

Remember:
Your PIN is private. You should never give it out and Scott Valley Bank will never ask for it. Our goal, quite simply, is to minimize your exposure to risk and the impact of any fraud. As always, please be diligent in monitoring transaction activity on your account and contact us immediately if you identify any unusual activity. No one can prevent all attempts at fraudulent activity, but you should feel more secure knowing we have put systems in place to help protect you.

Take precautions to avoid being a target of crime:

To avoid being a target of crime, do not wear conspicuous clothing or jewelry and do not carry excessive amounts of money.

Leave Copies of Documents and Itinerary With Relatives in the U.S.:

Leave a copy of the itinerary with family or friends at home in case they need to contact you in an emergency.

Make two photocopies of the passport identification page, airline tickets, driver’s license and the credit cards you plan to take. Leave one copy of each with family or friends at home, and pack the other copies separately from the originals. Leave a copy of the serial numbers of your travelers’ checks with a friend or relative at home. Carry your copy with you in a separate place and, as you cash the checks, cross them off the list.

Access to this information can help you expedite cancellation of credit cards and with other necessary contacts should a problem occur when you travel internationally.

We wish you safe travels!
